Introduction - De La Warr Pavilion

Sue Hubbard, the Poetry Society's first ever 'public art poet' and also a freelance art critic and novelist, was offered the opportunity to respond to Bexhill-on-Sea's celebrated modernist icon, the De La Warr Pavilion. Built in 1934-1935, the Pavilion was the winning design of Eric Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, following a competition initiated by the then mayor, Earl De La Warr, for a new leisure complex.
