Introduction - Saga Building
Saga's corporate headquarters, designed by Sir Michael Hopkins and opened in 1998, is a glass and steel office building overlooking the English Channel, accommodating up to 850 staff. It is complemented by a conference centre-*****-recreation facility-*****-staff canteen known as The Pavilion featuring a Michael Hopkins teflon-coated fabric roof.
Guyanese poet Maggie Harris, bowled over by these buildings on a chance first visit, elected to return to undertake an interactive residency, running creative writing workshops with Saga staff and giving a lunchtime performance in probably the grandest hi-tech canteen on the south coast. Links between Saga management and the Folkestone Literary Festival enabled a follow up ArchiTEXTS event featuring readings by Maggie Harris, Sarah Wardle and Ros Barber to be held during the Festival in September 2002.
